Man of the Match John Flanagan Match ball sponsored by North beach Fish Bar Match report by Fred Kellythorne

Yet again for third home game running the teams came out onto a slick looking Heacham pitch. Considering the recent rain fall the pitch was looking in perfect condition.

The teams kicked off into a blustery wind with Heacham playing the first half with the wind to their backs. Once again Heacham started with a few new faces in the team. Heacham started the brighter and quickly moved the ball up the left with Jahy Chima floating a loveless cross which was met by Jack Defty only to see his header just float over the cross bar. This was followed with some neat play as Heacham began to find their players up front with an early corner won by Alex Clunan which just sailed over the crossbar. Nathan Daws, George Rawlings and Ben Oliver began to assert themselves closing down the Sprowston Athletic midfield quickly and winning a majority of balls in the middle of the park. Then on six minutes the first real chance to Heacham with a lovely through ball by Jack Defty to John Flanagan who just shoots wide. Heacham were then awarded a free kick for a challenge on Ben Oliver which resulted in a Nathan Daws free kick just sailing over the crossbar, a sign of the frustration of Sprowston Athletic as more free kicks began to creep into the game as they struggled with the strong Heacham midfield. 15 minutes Harry Cupit making his debut and beginning to find his feet makes a lovely run and cross which just hits a Sprowston Athletic player and goes out for a corner, Heacham very much playing in the Sprowston half, who were defending well. The subsequent corner flys across the goal and misses every player on its way through. Then with John Flanagan beginning to find the ball more and more he picks the ball up and runs at the defence only to see his goal bound shot deflected off a defender for another corner. Then after 20 minutes Sprowston Athletic finally get out of their half and win a free kick just outside Heacham’s area, a lovely overlap and cross finds the Sprowston Athletic attacker who only managed to steer the ball wide. The first half continued in the Sprowston Athletic half with chances falling to john Flanagan who hit the post and had two shots saved by the goalkeeper, Ben Oliver had a super shot from a Jack Defty knockdown just go over the cross bar with the goalkeeper not moving. Then John Flanagan was put through with a delightful ball from Ben Oliver with only the goalkeeper to beat his chip is saved. Then as the half comes to a close Sam Pishorn finds John Flanagan up field with a great clearance only for his shot expertly saved by the goalkeeper. Jahy Chima then floated in a cross met by Nathan Daw who’s header creeps towards the line only to be cleared at the last minute. John Flanagan has a shot hit the post and the half comes to a close with both teams frustrated, Heacham should be in front and Sprowston Athletic not being able to get into any rhythm and defending for long stretches.
The second half started with a torrential downpour but in a similar vein with Heacham winning an early free kick which Nathan Daw took and well tipped over by the goalkeeper. Then six minutes into the second half the deadlock is broken as John Flanagan is put through on goal, from just inside the Sprowston Athletic half runs through, rounds the goalkeeper and finishes neatly 1-0 Heacham.
This seemed to wake Sprowston Athletic who managed some pressure in the Heacham half with Royce Rawlings and Matt Goss at the back defending resolutely against an ever frustrated Sprowston Athletic attack. With the tidy Jahy Chima being replaced by Adam Reeve Heacham again set about playing in Sprowston half. Then 19 minutes into the second half a mix up in the Sprowston Athletic defence between the centre back and goalkeeper sees the ball drop to John Flanagan who runs the ball into the area and slots into an empty net. Heacham now looking the fitter side. Heacham continued to pressurise the visitors with Corner after corner. The half continues with Heacham in the visitors end with Shots from Ben Oliver and Nathan Daw. The visitors then find themselves in the Heacham half and a mix up between Royce Rawlings and Adam Reeve the shot goes safely into Sam Pishorn’s hands. The only real chance to fall to the visitors during the half. With John Flanagan continually tormenting and getting the better of the visitors defence Heacham see out the half worthy winners on a day when the whole team put in a great effort which was appreciated by the good support from the sidelines. Special mention goes to Harry Cupit who making his debut at right back had a solid game. Quick to the tackle and was happy to get forward and support the attacks. Final score 2-0 Heacham.
